PREVENTING THE USE OF ALCOHOL, TOBACCO & OTHER DRUGS

Eaton County Substance Awareness Advisory Group has a special focus on the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and drug use by youth. We promote “protective factors” that help young people resist risky behaviors in our schools or communities. These programs include but are not limited to:

INSPIRING A TOBACCO FREE COMMUNITY

Our goal is to provide our local community with tobacco prevention information and use comprehensive strategies to reduce tobacco use and tobacco-related disease and death. Our primary goals are to help tobacco users quit, prevent youth from starting to use tobacco and protect the residents of our county from secondhand smoke. Our focus is to develop strategies and activities that will prevent the use of tobacco and at the same time implement and support activities that will control or alleviate the negative health effects of direct use or the indirect exposure to tobacco.

ZERO TOLERANCE

More than 24% of Eaton County 11th graders and 12% of Eaton County 9th graders have consumed alcohol in the past 30 days.  (Eaton County MiPHY 2016 Youth Survey). Our Coalition is here to change that statistic for the youth of and around Eaton county. We understand better than anyone that adolescent abuse of drugs and alcohol is a preventable behavior and that the disease of drug/alcohol addiction is a treatable disease. Our goal is to provide our local youth with prevention programs and to empower parents to have the needed conversations with their children about the consequences of underage drinking.

EDUCATING ON THE DANGERS OF MARIJUANA

Marijuana use has been shown to be dangerous for the teen brain, yet teens report easy access to the drug. In 2016,  over 35% of 9th graders and 60% of 11th grade students in Eaton County reported that marijuana was easily accessible and available. While we continue to work in partnership with law enforcement, community agencies and schools to reduce access, it is positive to see 93% of 9th graders and about 88% of 11th graders reported parental disapproval of marijuana use (2016 Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth Survey). The more students perceive use is risky, wrong, or that their parents disapprove of it, the better. Our coalition has learned that even as teens, children care about what parents say. We ask that parents express a no-use attitude. Research shows when parents form strong bonds with their teens and establish clear and specific rules about not using marijuana, teens are more likely to refrain from use. We encourage parents to emphasize Marijuana is still illegal in Michigan.

Rx ABUSE PREVENTION

In our coalition, we have learned firsthand how many youth and teens get their misused prescription drugs from a friend or relative, either for free, by buying them, or taking them without asking. In 2016, 7% of 11th graders and 5% of 9th graders reported using dangerous pain killers like Oxycontin in the last 30 days (2016 Eaton County MiPHY). We ask all parents and adults to make sure their prescription medication is locked up and or not  easily accessible to those that may abuse it. For people that require a specific medication, we encourage you to speak with your doctor on whether there’s an alternative medication with ingredients that have less potential for addiction. In addition, we have partnered with Capital Counties Commit, a campaign empowering young adults and community members about the negative effects of prescription abuse.
